3D Studio Max: Wooden Barrel - Accurate Geometry

A barrel is not a very complex object. Until you get close to it. This tutorial will help you make good looking wooden barrels quickly.

Although it looks pretty basic, a realistic barrel is not a two steps shape. I will show you how to create these really nice looking barrels with just a few tools.

Let's start with a nice sphere. In the Keyboard Entry rollout type 50 into the Radius box and hit Create.

Add a Taper modifier, and set its Amount to -0.45.

Add a second Taper modifier, this time with the Amount set to 0.90.

Add an Edit Poly modifier to the stack, and go into the Edge selection mode.

Set the marquee shape to Circular like in the image, then, in the Top View, select the edges as shown.

Delete the selected edges using BACKSPACE, not Delete. This way you will keep the polygons adiacent to the deleted edges. These polygons will form the top and bottom of the barrel.

Go back to the Edit Poly modifier, pick the Polygons subobject and select the top and bottom of the barrel.

Go to the Bevel tool and click on the small icon on its side. This will open the Bevel dialog box. Enter -3 for Height and 0.65 for Outline Amount and then hit OK.

Back to edges, select one row of edges between the top and bottom of the barrel as shown.

Hit the Loop button to select all edges parallel to the top and bottom of the barrel, but only those.

Once again, press Backspace to remove the edges without deleting the polygons.

Onto polygons now. In the Front View select all side polygons.

Click the little icon on the right of the Extrude button. This will bring up the Extrude dialog box. Select By Polygon as Extrusion Type, enter 4.5 as Height and click OK.

Our barrel is pretty much done. If it looks too "fat", adjust its size in the top view.

You can add more detail with a few Tube shapes to go around the barrel and a Cylinder on the top.

With the right materials this is how a barrel scene could look like.
